"Flat
Stanley" and his Awesome Journey The
Douglas 6th grade geography classes are doing a "Flat Stanley"
project to help the students learn more about geography, distance
measuring and travel.
"Flat
Stanley" is a character from a children's book by Jeff Brown.
Stanley is a normal boy until one day when he awakes to find that
the bulletin board that usually hangs above his bed has fallen on
him during his sleep and flattened him. He has many adventures while
flat; one of which is folding himself up and mailing himself to
different locations.
The
students in Ms. Collins' World Geography class have each made a
"Flat Stanley" that they have colored and laminated, along
with a Travel Journal to accompany him on his adventures. Each child
is to mail their Stanley package to a friend or relative. Upon receiving
Stanley, that person should send a postcard to the school to let
the student know where Stanley is. The class will be mapping their
Stanleys' travels and calculating the miles each one has covered.
Stanley is to visit with each recipient for no longer than one week,
during which time a brief journal entry is to be recorded (date
of arrival, date of departure, and any interesting thing Stanley
has done with you during his visit).
So
far, my daughter's Stanley has visited Nova Scotia, Texas, Massachusetts,
New Mexico, and spent a lovely Christmas in Aruba! He's currently
headed for Colorado.
